What is UK City of Culture?

Every four years the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) run a competition to find UK City of Culture.

The cities that are chosen experience a major boost in tourism, with people travelling to enjoy the incredible events that have been organised. These cities also benefit from increased investment and more opportunities, which brings the opening of new business and supports the local community.

Although the honour of this title is only for a year, it does not stop there. A legacy is born, and with it the challenge of capturing its essence.

About Coventry, City of Culture 2021

On the evening of Thursday 7 December 2017 cheers of celebration were heard from every corner of Coventry as we were announced the winners of City of Culture 2021. Our year as UK City of Culture started in May 2021 and there is a whole year of stuff going on here.

This is the city where movement began. From innovation in the transport industry to a history of activism, Coventry city has moved people for centuries. Why not have a look and see if there is something you would like to share and experience with your family or friends.

It may be bad timing to be holding events right now but - like during the blitz - the people of Coventry have taken on the challenge, keeping their communities safe with pop up outside events. Additional online events, such as the opening ceremony, have been held as well so everyone at home or abroad could enjoy it too!

Plan Your Visit

Now that the restrictions are lifting it is time for you to plan your visit to the City of Culture 2021 and come join us. If you are still a little nervous that is fine, we are too!

You can control what you are happy doing and reduce your risk.

• Visit places during the week, when others are at work or school.
• Visit indoor exhibits early morning or later in the day when less people are around.
• Choose less populated, outside places to eat or drink.
• You could bring a picnic or get takeaway and enjoy it in the many parks and gardens.
• Continue to wear your mask in closed confined areas such as public transport.
• Keep your distance from those you do not know.
• Stay in self-contained accommodation instead of hotels.
• Was your hands regularly between venues and your accommodation.
• Complete regular lateral flow tests.
• If you or your household experience symptoms, self-isolate.

There are lots of things to see and do in Coventry that are outside. Coventry is the right choice for this difficult time. It is the city of Peace and Reconciliation. It is full of Culture and Diversity. It will rise to the challenge and from the ashes like the phoenix sculpture that can be seen at the bottom of the new colourful Hertford Street.
