A staycation is when you go on holiday in your own country. They have become increasingly popular in recent years, and more people are benefitting from exploring closer to home.

What to remember when booking your UK Staycation

Think about the time of year

When booking your UK staycation, think about the seasons. If you don't like crowds then choosing a popular coastal destination during the school summer holidays might not be the best idea. If possible, it's worth seeing if you can book just out of peak season when prices are lower and there's fewer people around!

Be vigilant - check the warning signs of fraud

Holiday booking fraud is something you need to be wary of when booking and paying in advance. If using a booking site, it's worth double checking if the location actually exists and reading the reviews. There have been cases in the past of fake listings that risk really ruining your plans! Before you hand over any of your money, you should do the following checks to make sure the site is legitimate:

• Make sure the site you are booking on is secure. You can tell this from the padlock symbol in the address bar.
• Check for misspellings, as this can be an indication of a false site
• Check that the images are high quality, as low resolution images are often ones pinched from real sites and masked as their own!
• Be wary of being directed away from the main site for payment. It's also very rare to be asked to do a bank transfer to pay for holidays so if you're asked to do this there should be alarm bells ringing.
• Does the site offer a guarantee and refund policy that you are happy with?

Check your car before a long drive

Safety first! It's really important to check your car to make sure it’s roadworthy. Even if you're staying in the UK, you should make sure you have both breakdown and travel insurance sorted before you go. Here are some checks to start you off:

• Car battery (you should aim to do this about a week before you’re planning to go so you can get it sorted if there’s any problems)
• Tyre pressure
• Oil levels
• All lights
• Screen wash
